Hack. Design. Create.

Shift is a creator space for students at the University of Michigan who want to chase their passions outside of the classroom. We’re a tight-knit community of artists, designers, developers, and makers that share the unparalleled drive to bring our ideas to life.

What we do

Our purpose is to shape our Creators, to instill the confidence and skills necessary to experience the magic of bringing an idea to life.

Sandboxes

Each Creator is part of a smaller group within Shift called a sandbox. Every week, Creators meet with their sandbox to hang out, share life updates, deliver updates on their project, discuss their current challenges, gather feedback, set actionables, and make tangible progress on their projects.

Family Gatherings

We pride ourselves on being less of a student org and more of a vibrant and close community, something that resembles a family. This means giving Creators ample time to get to know each other - it’s why we have regularly occurring events like our Family Dinners, where Creators get to kick back and enjoy a nice home-cooked meal.

Fireside Chats

Our idea of collaboration extends beyond the Creator level. Every month, we invite a friend of Shift with real world experience to come by the house to have an intimate and candid discussion with Creators. Some of our notable past guests include Charlie Cheever, Caroline Lewis, Johnathan Patterson, and Jeff Sorensen.

The Space

Centrally located on campus, the Shift's workspace comes fully equipped with snacks, wide-display monitors, spare hardware, whiteboards, and a great sound system. Creators use the house to hang out with each other, jam on their projects, engage with speakers, in an atmosphere that’s a unique blend of fun, collaborative, and creative.

Shift alumni have raised funding from and joined companies like:

Mentorship

We believe that the best teachers are mentors - the ones who give you more than just technical advice or creative direction. At Shift, our mentorship is rooted in friendship and extends beyond just the scope of your project.

Experiential Learning

We encourage our Creators to learn by translating their thoughts into ideas and their ideas into action. Creators pursue projects that are unfamiliar and treat each experience as an opportunity, challenging what they know and what they’re capable of.

Community

We support our Creators unconditionally in their endeavors both in and outside of Shift and constantly remind them that they have an entire community behind them. We’re deeply invested in each other and genuine in what we think, say, and do.
